Tips On How To Purchase Industrial Casters

By Mattie Knight

The functioning and performance of casters is dependent on several factors. Some of those factors include nature of the floor, speed of movement, load capacity, and mode of attachment to the cart. These and many other factors should be the main considerations to keep in mind when choosing industrial casters for use in businesses as well as homes. This article will discuss these factors to help people in making decision regarding purchase and use of these devices.

The first fact to consider is the maximum weight the device is designed to support. This figure is usually determined by the manufacturer at the time of production and should not be exceeded for safe application of the wheel. Closely related to the maximum weight is the load per caster that can be supported on a cart. This figure can be derived by diving total weight a cart is supposed to carry by number of casters attached to it. The figure quoted should be slightly higher for safety purposes.

Of importance to is speed. Casters are made in a way as to move at different speeds under different circumstances. For instance, it is expected that the speed will differ when the cart is loaded and when it is empty. Failure resulting after internal break down is bound to occur when continuous violation of the speed limit is done. Manufacturers have machines that can duplicate applications scenarios in regard to speed. When not sure, one should seek for assistance from the producer.

The surface upon which the device is meant to be used on matters a lot too. Wheels rotate more efficiently and move faster when the surface is smooth and flat. However, when the surface is characterized by depressions and other kinds of defects, it becomes hard for the cart to move and more damage is done to the wheels.

Similarly, floors constructed from soft materials such as bamboo, ceramic, and wood usually get damaged by casters. They damage the beauty by gouging the surface, hence causing scratches and marks. Wheels made from rubber and plastic or other soft materials should be used on such floors.

Environment of application has often been overlooked when choosing these devices. That is a big mistake because the devices are not meant to be used in all environments. Changing the environment of application usually comes at a cost of either performance or physical integrity among others. Manufacturers are aware of this need and specify environments in which their products can be used. Finish features and wheels get most affected when environment of application is mismatched.

Casters are classified according to many criteria. One of such criteria is mode of powering. Under this classification, they may be power driven or manually driven. The mode of powering determines both speed and the amount of weight exerted on the wheels. In most cases, power driven products tend to get damaged faster and easily because more weight gets exerted on them by the load.

Modern products incorporate several features that improve efficiency and functionality. However, they also cost more. The cost can sometimes be so high that it becomes important to make the investment wisely.
