Searching For The Right Guitar Repair

By Nancy Sanders

All guitarists will from time to time need their instruments repaired after they have developed a fault or suffered damage. There are a lot of things that can go wrong with electric and acoustic guitars and it is important to get them fixed when they happen. If you are trying to find suitable guitar repair there are a couple of routes you can take and some things you can also do yourself.

Guitar stores are usually the best place to visit when you need your instrument looking at. Most shops will have a repair or inspection service and will look after your instrument for you. Yearly checkups and intonation setups are also a very common service offered by music stores in most areas.

There are also internet based companies who will work on musical instruments and these are another good option. After contacting them and explaining the problem they will arrange to have your guitar picked up and taken to their premises. After assessing the problem they will contact you with a price for the work and wait for the go ahead. It should be noted that if you are sending your instrument with a courier you should make sure it is insured while in transit.

Prices charged for repairs will be dictated by the severity of the fault or damage. Little problems such as a broken tuner or missing frets will not be too costly and will be a reasonably quick fix. Bigger problems such as neck replacement or arch top repairs will be significantly more expensive and take much longer.

To prevent serious faults developing there are a couple of simple things you can do yourself to maintain your instrument. Always keep a guitar in a case when you are not using it and this will prevent it suffering any knocks. After playing any guitars you should wipe them down with a lint free cloth to remove any moisture that may have come from your hands.

If you own an electric guitar it should undergo an inspection on an annual basis to keep it operating efficiently. The neck should be oiled and body cleaned and any dings touched up. The pickups and wiring should also be cleaned and checked for any wear and replaced if necessary. Strings should always be changed on a regular basis and this helps to keep a good tension on the neck.

An acoustic instrument will also require a certain amount of attention from owners to keep it operational. All woods should be kept free from dust and grime and special polish is useful for giving a protective finish. Any guitar that is not cased should be kept on a stand and not left leaning against a wall as this can seriously damage the neck and joint to the body.

If you have to store your guitar away for an extended period there are a couple of things that should be done. Clean the instrument thoroughly before putting it in the case and always store in a clean and dry area. Packets containing moisture absorbing gel should also be placed in the case and this will soak up any moisture that is in the atmosphere.
